W. Volleyball. Gamecock Volleyball Hosts Alabama for Alumni Night Friday

The South Carolina volleyball team begins its penultimate weekend of the season on Friday night, hosting Alabama at 7 p.m. for Alumni Night. Gamecock greats from years past will be honored before the match. To close out the weekend, Carolina travels out to Texas A&M for a noon first serve with the Aggies.

South Carolina dropped a 3-1 loss to Arkansas at home Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks are now 11-15 overall and 4-10 in the SEC this season, while the Razorbacks improve to 18-9 and 8-7 in conference play. Mikayla Shields (13 kills) and Abreia Epps (12) paced the offense, and Shields joined an exclusive club in the losing effort.

South Carolina volunteer assistant coach Julian Welsh-White was named one of 10 recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Diversity Award. The recognition enable the recipients to attend the annual AVCA coaches convention and receive hands-on mentorship and professional development.

South Carolina lost a thrilling five-set affair with Missouri Wednesday night, rebounding from a 2-1 deficit before losing 16-14 in the final game. Mikayla Shields set a career high with 29 kills and the team (11-14, 4-9 SEC) hit .343, its highest percentage in conference play this year, but Missouri (17-9, 10-3 SEC) smoked the ball to the tune of .406 to pull out the win.

The South Carolina volleyball team will be in the national spotlight Wednesday night, as it hosts Missouri (16-9, 9-3 SEC) for a 6 p.m. match on ESPNU. Tiffany Greene and Missy Whittemore are on the call, as the Gamecocks aim to follow up on last November’s upset of the Tigers at the Carolina Volleyball Center.

W. Volleyball. South Carolina Falls at No. 6 Kentucky, 3-1

South Carolina was able to take a set off No. 6 Kentucky Sunday afternoon, but dropped a 3-1 road decision (25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 16-25). Five Gamecock hitters finished with eight or more kills, but the defense couldn’t slow down one of the nation’s best offenses. The Gamecocks are now 11-13 overall and 4-8 in the SEC, Kentucky improves to 20-3 (11-1 SEC).

South Carolina’s offense broke out of a slump in a big way Friday night, as the Gamecocks set a season high for kills in a 3-1 win at Tennessee. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Carolina (11-12, 4-7 SEC), and gave the team its longest win streak over the Volunteers (11-10, 4-8 SEC) since 2002.

The South Carolina volleyball team will travel for a pair of weekend road matches, facing Tennessee Friday night and No. 6 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks (10-12, 3-7 SEC) look to extend their three-game win streak against the Volunteers, as well as earning their first win in Lexington since 2003.

Despite a season-best performance blocking at the net, South Carolina dropped a 3-1 decision at home to Auburn Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks took the opening set, but lost the next three to drop their record to 10-12, 3-7 in SEC play. The Tigers avenged a loss on their home court to Carolina, and are now 12-8 this season (5-6 SEC).

W. Volleyball. South Carolina Falls at No. 4 Florida, 3-0

South Carolina dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 4 Florida in Gainesville Friday night, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17. The Gamecocks are now 10-11 this season, 3-6 in SEC play, while the Gators now stand at 17-1 (9-1 SEC). Abreia Epps led the team with seven kills in the match.
